Bangladesh ranks 112th out of 137 countries in the Global Knowledge Index 2020. On the other hand, Bangladesh ranks lowest among South Asian countries.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation jointly published the Global Knowledge Index 2020 (GKI) at a conference in Dubai on Wednesday.
This year, Switzerland topped the Global Knowledge Index with a score of 63.6. This is the fourth consecutive time that the country has ranked first. The United States is in second place with a score of 61.1 and Finland is third with a score of 60.6.
On the other hand, India is at the top of the South Asian countries and number 65 in the world with a score of 44.4. Sri Lanka ranks seventh in the world and second in South Asia with a score of 42.1.
Among the South Asian countries, Bhutan ranks third with a score of 40.9, Nepal fourth with a score of 38.2 and Pakistan fifth with a score of 35.9. Bangladesh is at the bottom of South Asia with a score of 35.9 on the index.
In creating the index, seven factors have been taken into account, including education, technology, development and innovation. It is based on 133 variables in seven sectors. These are: pre-university education, technical and vocational education and training, higher education, research, development and innovation, information and communication technologies, economics and general support environment.
Bangladesh scored 43.9 points in the pre-university education sector. Bangladesh’s score for vocational and technical education is 49.
On the other hand, Bangladesh’s position in higher education sector is the most fragile, Bangladesh’s score in this sector is 24.1.
Furthermore, Bangladesh’s score in research, development and innovation sector is 16.4, ICT sector score is 43.1, Bangladesh’s score in economy sector is 31 .5 and the general support environment is 47.4.
The top 10 countries in the 2020 Global Knowledge Index are Switzerland, the United States, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Singapore, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong and China (combined).
