MA Jabbar, managing director of the DBL Group, said they had left the besieged Tigrai region on Saturday to join a convoy from Bangladesh and UN missions in Ethiopia.

DBL, Bangladesh’s leading garment exporter, established an export-oriented garment factory in the Horn of Africa region two years ago. At least 104 of the 2,000 workers at the factory are Bangladeshi.

Clashes broke out when the Tigris People’s Liberation Front, a regional rebel group in the Tigris region, recently attacked a central army camp, according to reports from international media including The Guardian and Reuters. There could be a new conflict at any time. Telephone and Internet communication systems have already collapsed due to the war situation.

MA Jabbar, Managing Director of DBL Group, told bdnews24.com: “We have been very concerned for the past 10 days. Some time ago, I learned that the trapped Bangladeshis had taken the road from Tigris to the capital Addis Ababa, with the UN team.

It has not yet been decided whether the workers will stay in Addis Ababa or move to Bangladesh. DBL Group has already booked hotels because of their location in the capital.

Previously, the company had said that a bomb had exploded in the area of the DBL factory. 104 workers are trapped in the affected area. They have sought the cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to evacuate them to safety.
