Bangladesh shot dead by Myanmar border guards

The Myanmar Border Security Force (BGP) shot dead a Bangladeshi fisherman in Nafndi. He died at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital around 11pm on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Islam, 35. He is the son of Gura Miah from the Baraitali area of ​​the Teknaf Sadar Union.

Nazir Ahmed, a member of the union council, said: “On Saturday night, three fishermen went fishing on the Naf river in wooden boats. Soon after, the Myanmar border guards opened fire on them. Mohammad Islam was shot in the stomach at that time. Later, other fishermen rescued him and took him to Teknaf Hospital. He was rushed to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital because his condition was critical. Mohammad Islam died there around 11 at night.

Teknaf OC Police Station (investigation) Khorshed Alam said: ‘I have received news of the death of one person. Despite the ban, the fishermen went fishing in the Naf River. The necessary steps have been taken in this regard.

Previously, on August 25, 2017, the government banned fishing in the Naf River to prevent illegal entry of Rohingya and drug trafficking. Despite the ban, many fishermen go fishing on the Naf River in the dead of night.
