The mural was vandalized in the presence of people at the eastern crossing of the Pirganj municipal city around 4:30 pm on Friday, Pirganj OC Pradeep Kumar Roy police station said.
Detainee Nur Alam (55) is the son of Ohidul from Raghunathpur village in Pirganj municipality.
The video of this Bangabandhu mural vandalism has gone viral on social media.
In the video, Nur Alam is seen smashing the mural with a brick in both hands. And the crowd is watching him.
Referring to eyewitnesses, OC Pradeep Kumar Roy told bdnews24.com that the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman mural was erected at the eastern crossroads of the Pirganj municipal city. Nur Alam broke the right side of the mural with a brick at around 4:30 pm on Friday.
“Nur Alam was arrested at the scene immediately after receiving the news.”
On December 6, a High Court court ordered the government to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of all the sculptures and murals of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman throughout the country.
When asked what kind of security had been ensured from there, OC Pradeep Kumar said: “Where the Bangabandhu mural has been broken, the mural is in public in the market and in the middle of a crowded area.” This happened during the day in this place.
“We don’t have maximum security after hours. This incident in public during the day; There are CCTV cameras on the market; Those video images are being collected. The Upazila administration has been asked to take measures to illuminate the mural ”.
OC Pradeep Kumar said: “Speaking with the detainee Nur Alam, he seemed to be mentally unbalanced. Appropriate legal action is being taken against him. ”
Meanwhile, Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi’s officer Rezaul Karim and Deputy Commissioner (Land) Tariqul Islam visited the site.
Upazila Nirbahi’s officer Rezaul Karim told bdnews24.com: “It is sad that the Bangabandhu mural was vandalized in public during the day. Legal action will be taken against the detained elderly man ”.
He said: “According to the locals, the detainee is mentally unbalanced. Wandering here and there. However, they are trying to find out why he destroyed the Bangabandhu mural. We are also trying to find out if anyone else is involved. ”
Pirganj Upazila Awami League President Imdadul Haque has expressed his anger.
He thinks that a part of a political party may be involved in breaking the Bangabandhu mural.
Imdadul Haque strongly condemned the incident and demanded exemplary punishment for those involved in the investigation.
