The Indian Supreme Court made a big announcement amid the spread of the coronavirus. The Supreme Court has set a four-month deadline for the Lucknow CBI Special Court to decide the trial and verdict in the Babri Masjid demolition case.

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered that the trial and verdict in the case against top BJP leaders LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharati and others, be completed by August 31.

The hearing in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case is taking place in the CBI special court in Lucknow. Previously, the superior court had set a deadline of July last year for the CBI to complete the hearing of the case within nine months.

That period ended in late April of this year. The lower court judge had previously petitioned the Indian Supreme Court for an extension of time.

The judge requested that it take longer to complete the trial due to the closure in India due to the coronavirus epidemic situation.

In the end, the Supreme Court granted four more months to complete the trial by accepting the statement of the CBI court judge.

The Supreme Court has said that Babri Masjid’s demolition case could be heard in lower court via video conference if necessary. The Supreme Court judge has insisted that the verdict be delivered at the end of the hearing in August.
