Nagorno-Karabakh has been in dispute with Armenia and Azerbaijan for decades. The region is internationally recognized as a territory of Azerbaijan. Armenians, who have occupied the area for decades, have fought for independence.
Clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan that surrounded the region in the 1990s killed more than 30,000 people. Later, the war was stopped by a temporary ceasefire.
The last time Armenia and Azerbaijan met again was on September 26. In a 44-day war, Azerbaijan liberated 300 settlements and territories. Armenians joined the peace agreement negotiated by Russia on November 10 in the face of a series of attacks by the Azeri army. As a result, Azerbaijan gained control of several cities without a war.
The agreement is considered internationally as a victory for Azerbaijan. Turkey has supported the agreement.
