The Azerbaijani army has raised the flag after capturing the disputed city of Madagiz in Karabakh. The city was once occupied by Armenia. Armenian President Ilham Aliyev made the announcement in a statement on Saturday. This was reported by the Turkish media Yeni াফ afak.
“Today (Saturday) the Azerbaijani army raised our flag in Madagascar,” he wrote in a tweet. Madagiz is ours. Karabakh is from Azerbaijan.
Aliyev added that on Saturday the city was renamed historic Sugovushan.
Two neighboring countries, Armenia and Azerbaijan, clashed last week over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. Baku claims that Armenia has attacked civilian areas and military bases in Azerbaijan. As a result, attacks and counterattacks began between the two countries.
The Azerbaijani parliament then declared war on various cities and regions.
Although Nagorno-Karabakh is within Azerbaijan, ethnic Armenians have been controlling the region, with Armenia supporting it. Although the region was separated from Azerbaijan in the 1969-94 war, it has not yet been recognized as an independent state.
