After six weeks of fighting, the Armenians agreed to hand over the Nagorno-Karabakh region to Azerbaijan in accordance with the peace agreement. According to him, the deadline will end at midnight on Sunday (November 15). However, considering the humanitarian aspect, Azerbaijan has extended the time by 10 more days.
According to Al Jazeera, residents of the Kalbazar opposition area were to leave their settlements on Sunday in accordance with the agreement. Ethnic Armenians have lived in the area for decades. However, on Sunday, Azerbaijan extended the deadline for another 10 days.
Hikmat Hajiyev, foreign affairs advisor to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, said the deadline for Armenian forces and their illegal residents to leave the area was November 25.
Hikmat Hajiyev said Armenia had requested an extension of time through Russian President Vladimir Putin, a mediator in the conflict zone; Ilham Aliyev accepted the offer on humanitarian grounds.
Meanwhile, some ethnic Armenians are destroying their own homes so that no one in Azerbaijan can use them. The disputed territory is internationally recognized as Azerbaijani territory, but has been ruled by ethnic Armenians since 1994.
The Nagorno-Karabakh region is at the root of the conflict between the two countries. The area is inhabited by ethnic Armenians. At the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union, the region voted to stay with Armenia. Then war broke out between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the issue. About 30,000 people lost their lives in that war in 1990. That war ended with a 1994 ceasefire.
Since then, the area has been internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. But under the control of the Armenian separatists. The Armenian government is supporting them. Despite decades of negotiations mediated by international powers, the peace agreement remains elusive.
Russia’s ceasefire agreement with Armenia and Azerbaijan was implemented last Tuesday. He is expected to supervise Russian peacekeepers in the opposition Karabakh region. Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Wednesday that Turkey had signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia. The Ankara Army will supervise with the Moscow Army.
