Awami League Leader Arrested for Raping Schoolgirl in Sonagazi

Sieve Uddin Nayan accusedPolice arrested an Awami League leader named Tamiz Uddin Nayan, 50, for allegedly raping a seventh grade student in Sonagazi, Feni. He was arrested at his own home in Chuni Majhi Bari in the Vadadia village of upazila around 10:30 pm on Thursday (October 8). He is the president of the Awami League, Ward No. 6 of the Matiganj Union. The Senior Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sonagazi-Daganbhuiyan Circle), Saikul Ahmed Bhuiyan, confirmed the incident.

According to the police, the victim’s family and locals, Tamiz Uddin Nayan, son of the late Syed Ahmed from Chuni Majhi Bari in Vadadia village, runs a furniture store. On October 1, around 7 am, the schoolgirl of a store clerk drove Nayan to the store and raped her while she was going to private classes. Nayan threatened to kill him and his father if he told anyone about the incident. When Nayan’s wife saw the matter, Nayan also hit her to shut her mouth. The matter came to the attention of neighbors after the dispute between husband and wife and later social networks were spread on Facebook. The student described the incident to her parents around 8 p.m. Thursday.

The Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Sonagazi Model Police Station, Sajedul Islam, told the Bangla Tribune: “The student’s mother brought a case to the Sonagazi Model Police Station on Thursday night accusing Tamiz Uddin Nayan. Nayan became the older brother of the victim.
