Attempted rape of a student on a moving bus: main defendant arrested

Bus driver Shahid Mia, the main defendant in a case of attempted rape of a college student on a bus in Sunamganj’s Dirai upazila, has been arrested.

The Dirai OC Ashraful Islam Police Station confirmed the information to Jugantar on Saturday morning.

He said the police Department of Criminal Investigation (CID) had arrested the bus driver Shahid.

However, the CID did not say when he was detained, he said.

The arrested martyr is Tawfiq Ahmed alias Mainna, son of Mollargaon, Jalalabad, Sylhet.

On December 26, the university student was returning home by bus from the home of a Lamakazi relative in Bishwanath upazila de Sylhet.

When the bus arrived near Sujanagar village of Dirai Township at night, the bus driver and his assistant tried to rape the girl because there were no other passengers in the car.

The girl jumped from the bus in fear and fell on the road. When the villagers rushed him to Dirai Hospital in critical condition, the doctor on duty sent him to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

The girl’s father filed a lawsuit against the bus driver, the assistant and three other people on the same day.

On December 26, the Police Investigation Bureau (PBI) arrested Abdur Rashid, an assistant bus driver, from Buraiya village in Gobindganj Syeder Gaon Union of Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj district.

The next day, the Judicial Magistrate. After giving a confessional statement under section 164 in the Ragib Noor court, he was sent to jail.
