Shahidul Islam Swadhin, a UP member arrested in connection with the attack on a Hindu community village in Noagaon, Shalla, Sunamganj, joined the BNP Awami League in 2009. In 2014, he became president of the Ward Juba League. The committee was canceled after a year for various reasons. He also joined the Hefazat rally on March 15 with the leaders and activists of a section of the Dirai Awami League.

However, the Juba League of Sunamganj District said at a press conference yesterday afternoon that Shahidul Islam, who led the attack, was not a member of the Independent Juba League. There is no Awami Juba League committee in that union, neighborhood or two upazilas since 2008. Those who want to turn it into a Juba League are trying to deflect attacks from communists and fundamentalists.

Meanwhile, Dulal Mia, president of the Juba Union Saramangal League, said: “Although there is a neighborhood president of the Independent Juba League, now there is no one. He joined the Awami League in 2009 from BNP.

The president of the Dirai Upazila Juba League, Ranjan Roy, said: ‘In 2008 I was declared president of the Upazila Juba League. There is no other position. We don’t even have union and neighborhood committees.

Meanwhile, local leaders of the Awami League have demanded that a case be brought under the Speedy Trial Law in relation to the attack and looting in Shalla. On the other hand, the police questioned eight people, including Shahidul Islam Swadhin, on Friday night. They have not yet been delivered to the court. Yesterday, the District Awami League Senior Vice President and District Council President Nurul Huda Mukut awarded a financial grant of Tk 2 lakh to the village of Noagaon.

Abni Mohan Das, vice president of the district Awami League, said in an exchange of views: “We demand that the case be brought to justice soon.”

District Chhatra League, Muktijoddha Sangsad, Udichi and other organizations have carried out various programs to condemn and protest the incident.

Demonstration canceled in Jamalganj: Hefazat-e-Islam Deputy Secretary General Mamunul Haque’s demonstration called in Jamalganj of Sunamganj on Sunday has been canceled in the face of resistance from freedom fighters and the people. The decision was made at a meeting of the Hefazat-e-Islam police, administration, politicians and leaders at the Jamalganj police station on Saturday afternoon.

The Jamalganj Awami League had called a rally with freedom fighters and people by microphone yesterday morning. They also announced resisting custody. The freedom fighters blamed the custody for the communal attack in Shalla and the looting of the freedom fighters’ houses. Hefazat-e-Islam had earlier called a demonstration on Sunday by printing posters. In this regard, the heroic freedom fighters, including the local administration and politicians, sat in an emergency meeting at the Jamalganj police station yesterday afternoon. Hefazat canceled the rally after lengthy negotiations.
