Attack on Hindu houses in Shalla: 3 more arrested

Police arrested three more defendants on Saturday night in connection with an attack on a Hindu house in the Habibpur union’s Noagaon village in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj. A total of 33 people have been arrested in the two cases.

Police arrested the three defendants in a raid in different villages of Dirai and Shalla upazilas on Saturday night.

Earlier on Friday night, the main defendant in the case and a Swadhin member of the local district Juba League president was arrested in a village in Moulvibazar’s Kulaura upazila by the Sylhet-PBI Police Investigation Office. Police from Dirai and Shalla Police Stations arrested seven more that night.

Shalla Police Officer-in-Charge (CO) Nazmul Haque told Naya Digant that police conducted raids on Friday and Saturday night and arrested 11 people, including the main defendant in the case. So far, the police have arrested 33 defendants in connection with the incident. The detained defendants have been sent to prison until Saturday morning. Others will also be sent to jail through the courts. OC Nazmul Haque also said that efforts are being made to investigate the case and arrest the other defendants.

Jhumon Das, a young man from the village of Noagaon in Shalla, insulted Allama Mamunul Haque, the deputy general secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam, and gave him a status on Facebook. The police filed a case at Shalla Police Station and Habibpur Union Parishad President Vivekananda Bakul, a village resident, filed another case at Shalla Police Station. The main defendant in the case brought by Vivekananda Bakul was Swadhin Membar, president of the Juba League in the adjoining ward. More than 1,000 unidentified defendants were named in the case.
