Five hydrants have been installed inside the tunnel as a precaution in case of fire. Chief Engineer KP Purushottam said that there were many obstacles in the construction of this tunnel. That’s why it took so long to finish the job, he said. Colonel Parikshit Mehra, director of the Atal Tunnel project, said experts associated with the project talked about changing the tunnel alignment. The tunnel is ten and a half meters wide. It has a 1 meter sidewalk on both sides.
Colonel Parikshit Mehra added: “Our dream project was to connect Manali with Leh. The construction of this tunnel was a very challenging task. Because we were only able to work from both sides of the tunnel. There is another side of the tunnel near Rotang Pass. And because of the snow there, it is possible to work only five months out of the year. The tunnel is named after the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. One of the two roads leading to Leh by road is Rotan Pass, the other is Jozilla Pass. Due to winter snowfall, traffic on these two roads came to a halt. It will be possible to move vehicles through the stable tunnel even in winter.
