The death toll from a shooting and shelling at Yemen’s Aden airport has risen to 26. As soon as the country’s new government stepped on the airport on Wednesday, several bombs exploded and fired at each other.

At that time, there were new ministers, including the prime minister of Yemen and the Saudi ambassador to the country. They were evacuated to the Mashek Presidential Palace shortly after the attack.

However, the incident did not end there. Hours after they entered the palace, another explosion was heard in the area.

Moin Abdul Malik, the prime minister of Yemen’s new Saudi-backed government, called the attack “treacherous and cowardly.” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also condemned the incident.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said two Red Cross officials were among those killed in the attack.

No group has taken responsibility for the attack. The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have been blamed but have denied the allegations.

Although the Houthis have not claimed responsibility, the Saudi-led military coalition has launched airstrikes against them.

Houthi-run Al Masirah television reported that the Saudi coalition carried out airstrikes overnight at the Sanaa international airport and two other Houthi facilities in the Sanhan and Hashish districts. However, so far no casualties have been reported.

Yemen’s new government was formed on December 16 on the basis of an agreement with rebels in the south. Recently, 24 ministers of this government were sworn in in Saudi Arabia. Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi was sworn in last Saturday.

President Hadi has been in Riyadh since the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, was captured by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in 2014. He recently formed a new government by sharing power with rebels in the south to deal with the rebels who control the north of Yemen. The Saudi-led military alliance is fighting for him.

Thousands of civilians have died and hundreds of thousands have been displaced over the past five years in Saudi-led violence against Yemeni rebels. The United Nations says Yemen has experienced the world’s worst humanitarian crisis in decades.
