At least 10 people were injured when the police beat them during an anti-rape procession

At least 10 people, including working women, were injured in the incident, said Sakhawat Fahad, Speaker of the Parliament of the Dhaka University of the Bangladesh Students’ Union.

The procession started from Shahbag at 12:15 am today as part of the previously announced program. The protesters then marched from Shahbag to the Prime Minister’s Office with black flags around 1:15 pm.

Nazifa Jannat, a student union activist, said police prevented protesters from reaching the road in front of Hotel Sonargaon in the capital. At that time, barricades with barbed wire were erected to stop the protesters.

The Daily Star said, “Kalopataka procession to the police barricade prepared to try to stop us. I ask you to go ahead with a peaceful procession. If we wanted to go ahead, the workers in the front row were beaten by the police.

“We want a society that is friendly to women,” he added. We don’t want any kind of oppression against women. But the use of the police in this country to raise their hands against our workers hit them in the stomach. There were no policewomen there.

Sakhawat Fahad told The Daily Star that Sajjad Hossain Shuvo, the organizing secretary of the Mohammadpur Thana branch of the student union, had broken his arm.

Asmani Asha, Mahmuda Deepa, Irfan Khan Prince, Emon Sikder, Arnab, Tahmid Tazwar Shuvro and Russell were seriously injured.

He said the injured were taken to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU).

On the next program, a torchlight procession and an effigy of the Home Secretary will be burned in Shahbagh at 7 pm today, Sakhawat Fahad said.
