Armenia’s intelligence chief Argisti Kiaramian was relieved of his duties on Thursday in the wake of Azerbaijan’s ongoing war over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Armenian President Armen Sargsyan fired Kiaramian from office in a decree citing his powers. Kiaramian was relieved of his post on the advice of Prime Minister Nicole Pashinyan.
The decree gave no reason for his dismissal. He said Kiaramian was appointed to the position last June.
Kiaramian was overthrown at a time when the Armenian army was at war with Azerbaijan. Armenia is in a very precarious situation at this point in the conflict that began on September 26. Meanwhile, the deaths of more than 300 Armenian soldiers have been reported.
After the Armenian army occupied Nagarno-Karabakh in 1991, hostilities broke out between the two former Soviet states. Internationally recognized as Nagarno-Karabagh Azerbaijan. However, it is occupied by Armenia.
After the new escalation of the conflict on September 26, an international ceasefire was called for, but neither side has done so yet. Both sides have continued to attack civilians and the military.
