The Nagorno-Karabakh enclave is officially part of Azerbaijan, but has been ruled by Armenians. Self-proclaimed authorities here say that Azerbaijani forces stormed a military airport in Ganza after bombing its capital, Stepanakert.
The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said in a brief statement on Sunday that Armenian forces had shelled the city of Ganja, killing one civilian and wounding four others.
Media images also showed several destroyed buildings.
Defense Minister Zakari Hasanov called the attack “clearly provocative” and said the fighting was intensifying.
Armenia has denied any involvement in the attack. But Nagorno-Karabakh leader Araik Harutunian later said that Ganja had been attacked. He also said that they had stopped shooting to avoid the death of civilians in the city.
Nagorno-Karabakh authorities say Azerbaijani forces were using the Ganja military airport to attack Armenian civilians, which is why it has been destroyed.
They said they took the plunge after the missile hit Stepanakerte.
According to the Armenpress news agency, many people were killed in the missile attacks in Stepanakerto and the city’s power supply was disrupted.
More than 200 people, including civilians, have died since clashes between the two parties began a week ago.
This is the fiercest battle between the two sides since the 1990s. This creates the risk of gradually turning into a broader regional conflict. Fears are growing that Armenia’s military allies, Russia, and Azerbaijan’s traditional ally, Turkey, could be embroiled in war.
