Police continue to collect evidence, investigate and question a man named Abu Yunus Mohammad Shahidunnabi Jewel after he was beaten to death at the Burimari land port in Lalmonirhat’s Patgram upazila. Lalmonirhat Additional Police Superintendent Rabiul Islam said the culprits would be brought under the law through an investigation.
The police officer said: ‘No case has yet been filed. However, the Parishad Union, the family of the deceased and the police will present several cases. Previously, evidence was being collected, investigated and questioned by locals to identify the real cause and the culprits. He said this at a briefing held at the Patgram police station on Friday.
Earlier Thursday night, agitated local people burned Shahidunnabi Jewel’s body after beating her to death for allegedly insulting the Quran in the mosque. The deceased was identified as Abu Wazed Miah of Shalban Mistry Para in Rangpur. He is a former Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College librarian. Another man named Sultan Jobayer Abbas (45) was injured in the incident. He is the son of Sheikh Abbas Ali from the same area, a document writer by profession.
Lalmonirhat Additional Police Superintendent Rabiul Islam said: “When the agitated mob broke open a room door at the Union Parishad and began beating Shahidunnabi, the police rushed to rescue him. Members of the police were also injured at the time. However, Shahidunnabi could not save himself. However, the police rescued the other person who was with him.
He said the case was being prosecuted and no arrests had been made. But everything is in process. Attempts are being made to discover the real facts.
