He is also hopeful that these onions will reach the country through the Chittagong port as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, onion prices have started to rise in Chittagong’s wholesale and retail markets after India announced the cessation of exports.
The price of onion has risen from Tk 15 to Tk 20 per kg in the Khatunganj yard, the largest wholesale market in Chittagong.
Mohammad Idris, general secretary of the Hamidullah Market Entrepreneurs Association in Khatunganj, said the onions were sold at between 60 and 65 Tk per kg on Tuesday. The price on Monday was 40-45 rupees.
Noting that the onion price has risen due to the closure of India, he said that some onions from outside the country are expected to hit the market in a few days. So the price can stabilize a bit.
Meanwhile, the onions have been retailed at a price of Tk 60 to 75 per kg in different parts of the city. The price on Monday was 45-50 rupees.
