A sedition case has been brought against Maulana Muhammad Mamunul Haque, leader of Bangladesh Khilafah Majlis, Mohammad Jonaid alias Junaid Babungari, Secretary General of Hifazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and Syed Faizul Karim for commenting against the sculptures.

The case was brought to the Dhaka Metropolitan Main Magistrates Court on Monday (December 6) by Aminul Islam Bulbul, central chairman of Muktijuddha Mancha. A court hearing will be held at 11 am to address the case, judicial sources said.

Mamunul Haque, the defendant in the case, said in the BMA Bhaban auditorium on Topkhana Road in the capital on November 13: “Those who place idols in the name of Bangabandhu’s sculpture cannot be Bangabandhu’s children. Stop placing this statue. If our request is not accepted, Shapla Chattar will reestablish with the Touhidi people. ‘

On the same day, the defendant Syed Faizul Karim raised his hands and swore to ordinary Muslims who came to hear his sermon at a place called Gandaria near Dholaikhal, saying: I don’t want to donate blood, I won’t stop when I start donating. If a seventy-two foot statue of Lelin from Russia can be lifted with a crane and thrown into the sea, then I think this statue of Sheikh Saheb will be opened today and tomorrow and thrown into the Buriganga.

The defendant Mohammad Jonaid alias Jonaid said in Babungari Hathazari: “If the country is governed by the Charter of Medina, there can be no sculpture.”

He warned the government: “If we do not deviate from the sculpture’s construction plan, another Shapla Chattar incident will occur and the sculpture will be scrapped.”
