Another patient, Momena Begum, 45, died in a fire in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Corona Unit in the new building of the Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital. He died in the old burn unit around 4 p.m. Thursday. The death toll stood at four.
Momena’s house is in Machimpur, Rupganj, Narayanganj.
Meanwhile, 9 patients are in the ICU of the burn unit. One of them was transferred by his relatives to a private hospital. One of the patients in the burn unit received life support. The hospital director, Brigadier General Nazmul Haque, said it would be possible to open 10 ICU beds in a week.
The ICU caught fire last Wednesday. An investigative committee made up of fire service and hospital authorities gathered evidence after inspecting the scene yesterday. Members of the investigation committee did not immediately comment on the cause of the fire and the negligence.
After inspecting the scene, Nur Hasan, deputy director of the fire service headquarters and head of the investigation committee, told reporters: “The investigation is ongoing. I am now visiting the scene. I have collected evidence from the scene. Also , I am taking testimony from different people. Hopefully, I will be able to send the report soon.
In response to a question, he said: ‘There is nothing to say about how the fire started. I am also investigating if there was a fire suppression system in the hospital. Nothing can be said in abundance at this point.
The hospital director, Brigadier General Nazmul Haque, said PWD electrical engineers had visited the damaged ICU in the morning. Additionally, technicians will inspect it for repairs.
In response to a question, the director said, Dhaka Medical has two crown units. In a new building, in another old unit burned out. The old burn unit had a 10-bed ICU. There was a postoperative room next door. A total of 20 ICU beds have been introduced in the two departments. There is no problem in treating patients with Kavid. 10 more ICU beds will be introduced in the next week.
