On Monday, the two sides accused each other of heavy bombing, according to Reuters.

This is the most intense fighting between the two countries since 2016. This has raised concerns about the stability of the South Caucasus region. The oil and gas supply pipeline to the world market passes through that region.

Although Nagorno-Karabakh is inside Azerbaijan, the Armenian people have been controlling the region.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced on Monday a partial “military mobilization” to protect national security. His foreign minister said six civilians have been killed and 19 injured since the fighting began.

The Interfax news agency quoted the Armenian Defense Ministry as saying that 200 Armenians had been injured. Earlier, Nagorno-Karabakh said 15 more soldiers had been killed.

Also on Sunday, Nagorno-Karabakh said 18 soldiers had been killed and more than 100 wounded. The attacker struck shortly after noon in front of a crowd of mourners.

On Sunday, Armenia announced a full “military mobilization”. They also demanded that the Azerbaijani forces regain control of the areas they had lost.

Armenia has accused the Azerbaijani forces of bombing several areas. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry says Armenian forces are shelling the city of Tartar.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region has been in dispute for four decades between the Christian-majority Armenia and the Muslim-majority Azerbaijan. After renewed clashes between the two parties, several countries have started diplomatic activities to defuse tensions.

China and Russia have called on both sides to exercise restraint. Russia, Armenia’s traditional ally, has called for an immediate ceasefire. Regional power Turkey, on the other hand, has said it will support its traditional ally Azerbaijan.

At one time, Armenia and Azerbaijan were part of the Soviet Union. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the two countries became independent. Since then, the two neighbors have been embroiled in a dispute over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
