A statement from Al-Sultan Abdullah’s palace on Saturday indicated that the “Council of Rules” will meet soon.
Previously, Reuters reported, citing several officials on condition of anonymity, that Prime Minister Mohiuddin had met with Sultan Abdullah on Friday and proposed a nationwide state of emergency. Officials also demanded that the proposal also suspend the proceedings of the current parliament.
Strongly criticizing the proposal, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said the prime minister was using this tactic to retain power.
After Mahathir Mohamad’s sudden resignation from the post of prime minister last March, Mohiuddin became the new prime minister chosen by Sultan Abdullah. He was deputy prime minister to former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who was convicted of corruption. He also served as Mahathir’s Home Secretary.
But the influential politician and former prime minister Mahathir did not like to become prime minister at the behest of his own interior minister, Sultan. He could not accept this decision. He said the appointment was illegal and amounted to treason.
As a result, despite the new prime minister in March, Malaysia’s political turmoil continues. Added to that is the coronavirus epidemic. Covid-19 infections are increasing in the country; At the same time, the pressure on the Prime Minister is increasing.
On top of that, last month, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim threatened to oust Mohiuddin from the post of prime minister in a parliamentary vote. He also stated that he has the necessary majority for this.
This is why Mohiuddin is heard to have proposed a state of emergency to the Sultan to save energy.
The sultan’s palace, however, did not provide any information on the prime minister’s proposal. He simply said that Sultan Abdullah would soon speak to other Malaysian rulers about the current situation in the country.
A statement from the palace read: “Al-Sultan Abdullah is well aware of the importance of continuing the current Malaysian administration to deal with the threat of the Kovid-19 epidemic.”
There are nine royal families in Malaysia. The Rules Council is made up of the heads of the family.
This council has the power to repeal any law of the land and question any national policy.
Rumor has it that the council could meet next Sunday. However, Reuters has not yet received any confirmed information.
The Prime Minister’s Office also declined to comment on the state of emergency proposal.
The 2021 budget proposal is scheduled to be presented in the country’s parliament on November 8. However, in the current situation, there are doubts about the approval of the Mohidin government’s budget proposal.
If the budget proposal is not approved, there may be a vote of no confidence against Mohiuddin in parliament. And if you lose, you must call early elections.
And if a state of emergency is declared, it is not necessary to present a budget proposal in Parliament at the scheduled time.
