Chief Elections Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said: “The United States cannot complete the vote count in four or five days. And we can announce the result in 10 minutes on EVM. The United States should learn from us.
He made the remarks in response to a question from reporters after voting at IES School and College in Uttara Sector 5 on Thursday (November 12).
The CEC said: ‘Voters will go downtown on their own. I always say about the American elections, it has to look global, it has to work locally. The electoral culture in the United States is 150 years old. In addition, there is another issue, we made good decisions from the United States-Europe. On the one hand, they should learn from us. Because the United States cannot count the votes in four or five days. At EVM we count the votes in 10 minutes and announce the result in the center. This thing does not exist in the United States. In its nearly 250 years of democratic experience, it has yet to do so. Second, they do not have a central electoral commission.
Regarding the BNP’s allegations, he said: ‘No one has occupied a single center. Nobody did. The BNP voting agent did not go to the center. I discovered. My president informed me that no BNP electoral agent had informed him. And a respected person from BNP called me in the morning. He said that some people would come to me to complain. I went to the office for him and sat down. They did not come. Later I came to my office to accept if someone filed a complaint. I investigated the allegations. The claim is not true.
Regarding low voter turnout and no announcement of general holidays, the CEC said, “Voters may be less familiar with EVMs. I don’t know exactly, it’s a matter of analysis. However, this is not the case in all cases. 61 percent of the votes were cast in local government elections. The elections to the National Assembly are a little less. I think they can better say why the voters don’t come. Ask me if my management is okay. Voters will go downtown on their own. And as a result of announcing the general license earlier, it has been seen that many people go home after the license. That is why the voters are low. With this in mind, voting does not take long, so this time the general holiday was not granted.
