Alleged death of a young man in police torture in Sylhet

It has been alleged that a young man named Raihan Ahmed (35) died after being tortured at the Bandarbazar outpost of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police.

The victim’s family claimed that prior to his death, Raihan had called him from an unknown number and asked him to come to the Bandarbazar outpost with the money. However, police said the young man was rescued after being injured in the massive beating and died after being admitted to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Metropolitan Police (North) Deputy Commissioner Azbahar Ali Sheikh said police were investigating the matter.

The deceased was identified as Raihan Ahmed, son of the late Habibur Rahman from the Akhalia Neharipara area of ​​Sylhet City. He used to work in a private diagnostic center in the Rikabibazar area of ​​the city.

Locals set tires on fire on the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway in the Akhalia area around 3:30 pm on Sunday. The protesters reportedly demanded the trial of the policemen implicated in Raihan’s murder. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road at that time, causing serious traffic jams.

Raihan’s cousin, Abdur Rahman, said that Raihan left the house at around 10:30 pm on Saturday (October 10). Family members have not had contact with him since. He would return home at 12-1pm after finishing work at the diagnostic center. However, he did not return home that day. His father (honest father) from an unknown number around 4:30 on Sunday morning. Raihan called Rafiqul Islam and asked him to come to the Bandarbazar outpost with the money.

“We saw signs of a stab in Raihan’s leg,” he said. Some nails were inverted. He was tortured to death by the police. We demand justice.

Rafiqul Islam said there was a policeman talking on the phone after he went to the Bandarbazar police post with some money. He told me to go to the outpost from 9:30 am to 10:00 am. He asked me to bring 10 lakhs at that time. The policeman said that those who had brought Raihan were not at the ford, they were all sleeping. He wanted to meet Raihan at the time, but was not allowed to.

He added that the number from which the call was made is likely that of a police officer. Although the number has now been contacted, no one answers the phone.

Raihan’s cousin, Abdur Rahman, said that after going to the outpost around 9:30 am, he was informed that “Raihan was not at the outpost and was taken to the hospital.” Later, Raihan was pronounced dead at Osmani Medical College Hospital. His body was in the cold room at the time.

Abdur Rahman alleged that Raihan was tortured to death by the police. However, police said he was killed in the massacre. There are no signs of injury on his body. We saw a stab in the leg. Some nails were inverted. He was tortured to death by the police. We want justice.

Family members said there was no information of a kidnapping and drug case against Raihan at the Kotwali Police Station in Sylhet.

According to documents from Osmani Medical College Hospital, Raihan was admitted to the hospital at 7.40am and died at 7.50am.

Sylhet Kotwali Police Station Inspector (investigation) Soumen Mitra said the mobile phone number from which the young man’s family was called is under investigation. The Kotwali Police Station has registered two robbery and drug cases on behalf of the deceased youth. These problems are also being investigated.

The additional deputy commissioner (Media) of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police, Jyotirmoy Sarkar, said that the young man was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Police are investigating the incident. Earlier, the body was handed over to the family after an autopsy around 3:30 pm.
