From Hathazari: Hathazari Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Mueenul Islam Madrasa, where she has spent more than half her life as General Director of the Madrasa for 34 consecutive years, has been buried in the premises of Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi.
His janaza prayers were held on Saturday (September 19) at 2 pm at the Hathazari Madrasa facility.
It was chaired by Maulana Mohammad Yusuf, the eldest son of Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi. Hundreds of thousands of devout people from different parts of the country, including academics, politicians, and government officials, participated in the largest janaza.
After Janaza, he was buried in the Baitul Atiq Jame mosque cemetery inside Hathazari Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Mueenul Islam Madrasa. At that time, the pious people who came to the janaza, including the colleagues, students, devotees and followers of the centennial scholar Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, burst into tears.
Hefazat-e-Islam founder and Amir Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi passed away at the Asgar Ali Hospital in Dhaka on Friday night. Allama Shafi’s body was transferred from Asgar Ali Hospital in Gandaria to Jamia Arabia Imdadul Uloom Faridabad, a traditional madrasa in Dhaka, around 11pm.
At the end of the bath and shroud, the devotees had a chance to see his body. At midnight, an ambulance carrying his body left for Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong. An ambulance carrying the body of Allama Shafi arrived at Hathazari Madrasa under the surveillance of the Rapid Action Battalion-RAB around 9:30 am on Saturday. His body was then buried at the Hathazari Madrasa facility for devotees and followers to view.
Hearing the news of Allama Shafi’s death, his devotees from across the country began coming to Hathazari on Friday night to see him one last time and participate in his janaza. On Saturday morning, people flocked to Hathazari. On the Chittagong-Hathazari Highway, law enforcement officials have to work hard to cope with pressure from the people.
At one point the traffic at the Hathazari bus stop stopped. From Oxygen in the city to Hathazari, traffic pressure increased several times. Many participated in the janaza on foot under the scorching sun.
The police and the RAB along with the BGB and executive magistrates were deployed to avoid any unfavorable situation centered on the large gathering of people attending the janaza of Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, the country’s top cleric.

Even after the funeral, we closely followed the situation. Until the situation returns to normal, additional police forces will be deployed in Hathazari, ”he added.
Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi was born in 1918 in the village of Pakhiartila in Rangunia upazila of Chittagong. His father’s name was Barkam Ali and his mother’s name was Meherunnesa Begum. He is the father of two sons and three daughters.
Allama Shafi began his education at Sarafvata Madrasa in Rangunia. Then he studied at Al Jamiatul Arabiya Madrasa (Patia Jiri Madrasa) in Patia. Later he studied at Darul Uloom Moinul Islam Madrasa in Hathazari and Darul Uloom Deoband Madrasa in India.
In 1986, Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi assumed the post of General Director (Muhtamim) of Hathazari Darul Uloom Mueenul Islam Madrasa. He held the position for 34 consecutive years before resigning Thursday to a student movement.
Hathazari Darul Uloom Mueenul Islam Madrasa is the largest and oldest madrasa in the country. Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi ran the Qaumi Madrasas as General Director of this Madrasa.
Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi was the president of Al Hayatul Uliya Lil Jamiatil Qawmia, Befaqul Madaris, the main organization of Qawmi madrasas in the country. He founded Hefazat-e-Islam in 2010. He served as Emir of that organization until his death.
Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi suffered from various physical problems for a long time due to old age. In recent years, he has been treated in national and foreign hospitals on several occasions. He was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital at midnight Thursday.
As his condition deteriorated on Friday, he was airlifted to Asgar Ali Hospital in Dhaka in the afternoon for better treatment. Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, the country’s top Qaumi court scholar, breathed his last in this hospital at night.
