The entire Sylhet district has been left without power after a devastating fire in the electrical substation. Power supply was also cut off in Sunamganj district until Tuesday evening. It is not known how the fire occurred at the Kumargaon 132/33 KV substation in the Akhalia area in Sylhet. There are four lakh 32 thousand clients in this sub-center. Electricity was also supplied to the national grid from here. A committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
Power supply to the Sylhet and Sunamganj districts was cut off after a fire broke out in the Kumargaon power substation around 11:15 am yesterday. The fire was controlled at 12:30 pm thanks to the efforts of seven fire service units. The fire damaged various equipment, including the substation’s transformers.
Although the power situation was normal in Sunamganj around 6pm, power did not reach Sylhet city and district until 8pm. As a result, people have suffered. No one has been able to say for sure when the power supply will be normal. Microphones have been going on in the city since 2pm to inform city dwellers about the power outage due to the fire.
According to the interested persons of the electrical substation, yesterday a fire started in the 33 KV feeder IC-2 and the power transformer T-6 of the power plant. Subsequently, an error occurred in the substation’s DC system. The fire damaged various electrical equipment, including the control panel, auxiliary transformer, section bus conductor, feeder control panel, feeder middleman, and city conductor.
According to the same source, after receiving the news of the fire, seven units of the fire department arrived at the scene and tried to control the fire. The fire was brought under control around 12:30 pm. While trying to put out the fire, a fire service worker named Jayant Kumar was burned. He was admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Kobad Ali, acting deputy director of the Sylhet Fire and Civil Defense Service, said seven units were able to control the fire. Attempts are being made to determine the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
Khandaker Mokammel Hossain, Chief Engineer in the Sales and Distribution department of Power Development Board (BUBO) Sylhet, said: “Efforts are being made to normalize the power supply. Initiatives have been taken to repair equipment damaged by the fire. However, it is not possible to say now when the situation will be normal.
Meanwhile, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner M Kazi Emdadul Islam visited the site around 12:30 pm after receiving news of the fire. He spoke with Beauvoir engineers and officials about the cause of the fire. The deputy commissioner said a committee with experts would be formed to find out the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Power Grid of Company has formed a four-member committee to investigate the fire. However, no Sylhet official was included in the committee. The chief engineer of the power distribution and development zone, Sylhet Khandaker Mokammel Hossain, confirmed the matter. He said the investigation committee was convened by an executive engineer from Srimangal. The committee was formed to determine how the fire started and how much money was lost.
