A police officer has been fired for helping Deputy Inspector (SI) Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, who allegedly tortured Raihan Ahmed to death at the Bandarbazar outpost in Sylhet, to flee. It’s Hasan Uddin, the two CI (SI) deputy inspectors from the same police post.

The protests took place in various locations on Wednesday, 10 days after the death of Raihan, a resident of Neharipara in the city. At the same time, protests against the gang rape incident in MC College’s dormitory continue in parallel.

Sources said that after the incident of Raihan’s death, the charge of assisting Sub-Inspector (SI) Akbar in charge of the Bandarbazar outpost to escape and conceal information was initially tested against Hasan Uddin from the same outpost. For this reason, he has been suspended from work.

Confirming the matter, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media), BM Ashraf Ullah Taher, told Kaler Kanth on Wednesday, “The police are continuing their work on the Raihan death case. Akbar was temporarily fired after it was discovered that he had helped him escape from the Bandarbazar police post to IC.

Regarding the news of the arrest of SI Akbar, he said: “So far we have no information about the arrest of Akbar.”

An organization called ‘Bangladesh Against Rape and Injustice’ staged a blockade in front of the Shaheed Minar center in Sylhet town yesterday afternoon to protest Raihan’s death in police custody and gang rape in the MC College dormitory . The Socialist Student Front and the Bangladesh Students Union expressed their solidarity with the blockade program.

The speakers said that anarchy is increasing in the country due to the lack of justice. There have been attacks on long marches against rape, murder and impunity. Condemning this, they immediately demanded the arrest of SI Akbar and an exemplary trial of the guilty. At the same time, he exhorted the people to participate in the united movement.

The Student Rights Council held a sit-in in front of the outpost in the Bandarbazar area of the city around 12 noon demanding the same. The Sylhet Nationalist Online Activists Forum and We Are Nationalists held a sit-in at the same location around 4:30 pm to demand the arrest and exemplary punishment for those involved in Raihan’s death. Youth Voice of Sylhet, Helping Hands and Dirai Shalla Youth Forum participated in the program in solidarity with them. In the same place at 5 pm, the Sylhet District Parliament and the Lakkatura Section of Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi organized a protest song against the oppression and torture of women, extrajudicial executions and impunity. Amid the protest song, they vigorously demanded the closure of Raihan’s death in police custody, the gang rape in the MC College dormitory, rape after rape, harassment and other wrongdoing across the country.
