At least 12 Taliban militants were killed in an airstrike by Afghan forces in the northeastern province of Kunduz. 12 more people were injured. The attack took place on Saturday local time, according to the Afghan Defense Ministry.

Afghan Defense Ministry officials say the airstrikes killed at least 40 Taliban fighters. Authorities have not confirmed whether civilians were injured. They said an investigation into the attack on the Taliban base had begun amid ongoing peace talks between the two sides.

Fatima Aziz, a member of parliament, said the first attack hit a Taliban base. But during the second attack, civilians gathered at the scene, causing casualties. She said the attack killed 11 civilians and left five missing in Kunduz’s Khanabad district.

However, a witness said that at least 12 innocent people, including children, were killed and 18 others injured in the airstrikes. He also claimed that several Taliban fighters were killed in the attack.

The Afghan government and representatives of the Taliban met last week in Qatar’s capital Doha for peace talks aimed at ending nearly two decades of war.
