The Finance Ministry has issued a warning to the country’s banks for fear of cyber attacks. Last Thursday, the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance sent a letter to the banks. The North Korean-based hacker group ‘Beagle Boys’ is said to have participated in stealing money from Bank of Bangladesh reserves in 2016. They can also withdraw money from ATMs of different banks in Bangladesh and hack the network Swift.

In view of this, banks have increased surveillance of online transactions and ATMs. Some banks have started closing ATM booths at night. Mohammad Shams-ul-Islam, Managing Director of Agrani Agrani Bank, said: “We have increased security only after receiving instructions from the Ministry of Finance.” All necessary measures have been taken.

In early August, the central bank issued a warning about a new cyber attack on Bangladeshi banks. The banks were instructed to be vigilant as a group of North Korean hackers could carry out the attack. As a result, many banks limit online banking services. Again, a bank stops withdrawing money from the ATMs of customers of other banks.

It emerged that the central bank received information in mid-August that a group of hackers called the ‘Beagle Boys’ could carry out cyber attacks on banks. The central bank was told that the group was from North Korea. Given this, on August 26 he sent a letter to the banks to be vigilant. After receiving the letter, all banks took special measures. However, no attacks were reported. It is reported that this group could launch a new attack. Banks have taken action in this regard.
