A small number of vehicles began to circulate on the road around 10 pm on Sunday. Even then, the local administration was repairing the damaged roads.
Earlier in the evening, Hefazat-e-Islam activists withdrew from the roadblock.
Hefazat leaders and activists blocked the road in front of Hathazari Madrasa from 2.30 pm on Friday.
The brick walls have been seen there since Saturday morning. The wall has been removed. Work is being done to fill the gaps made in some points of the road.
Executive Director of Hathazari Upazila. Ruhul Amin told bdnews24.com that the traffic started around 10pm. The road was closed as of 2:30 p.m. on March 26.
“With everyone’s cooperation, the Chittagong-Fatikchhari-Khagrachhari highway is adapting to traffic.”
Due to the protest, the vehicles did not travel on the roads from Chittagong to Khagrachhari and Fatikchhari and Nazirhat. The people in those areas were in a kind of lockdown.
On Saturday, people from Fatikchhari and Nazirhat were seen walking on foot in an emergency.
On Friday and Saturday, thousands of Hifazat-e-Islam activists were stationed on the road in front of Hathazari Darul Uloom Moinul Islam (Hathazari Bara Madrasa) in Hathazari Upazila Sadar. Most of the blockers are students of that madrasa.
Thousands of students from the madrasah took to the streets after Friday afternoon prayers to protest Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh and clashed with the police.
At one point, they attacked and destroyed Hathazari Thana, Upazila Land Office, and Upazila Dak Bungalow.
Hefazat workers also set fire to the land office at that time. Four people were seriously injured in the clash and died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Since Saturday morning it has been seen that barricades have been erected on the road with brick walls, iron bars and tin.
The administration asked the Hefazat workers to leave the road, but they did not respond. They were on the road all day Sunday after staying overnight on Saturday.
Hefazat’s central leader, Azizul Haque Islamabadi, said on Saturday that his workers were “simply blocking peaceful roads.”
Hefazat leaders and activists left the road Sunday night.
Then the local administration began working with road rollers and various machinery and workers to remove the brick walls from the road and fill in the gaps.
