He has spent 20 long years in dark jail cells on trumped-up charges of killing his wife and children. The open sky was not seen. The sweet sun did not touch, the breeze blew. Finally, Sheikh Zahid (50) saw the light of the free world from that prison condom cell. Zahid cried emotionally after being released after 20 years.
Sheikh Zahid was released from the Khulna District Jail at 7.25pm on Monday. At that time, his family members were overwhelmed with emotion when they found him.
Zahid’s release order reached the Khulna District Prison from the Bagerhat court at noon. Zahid was released overnight after receiving the court order, the superintendent of the Khulna District Jail said. Omar Farooq.
He said that Zahid Sheikh was sentenced to death on June 25, 2000 for killing his wife and one and a half year old daughter. Since then, he has been on death row in the prison condom cell for 20 years. But the Supreme Court Appeals Division acquitted convict Sheikh Zahid on August 25. The Supreme Court sent its acquittal to the convicted Bagerhat court. He also said he was released after instructions reached Khulna jail on Monday.
Meanwhile, upon the news of Sheikh Zahid’s release after 20 years, his relatives had already positioned themselves in front of the main gate of the district jail. His uncle, Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman, his brothers-in-law Azizur Rahman and Abdus Salam and his younger sister were present at the time.
After his release, Sheikh Zahid told reporters: “I never thought they would release me. I was innocent. He has spent 20 years in jail with great difficulties. He said his wife’s ex-husband was involved in the killings. His mother-in-law hung him up on this case.
His brother-in-law Azizur Rahman came to pick up Sheikh Zahid from the prison gate. Azizur said: “During the case, the investigating officer demanded 50,000 rupees from us. Unable to pay, he knowingly filed a charge sheet against Selim. Zahid was sentenced to 20 years in prison without any crime.
Zahid Sheikh’s uncle, Akram Hossain Sheikh, lamented: “Who will give back Zahid’s 20 years of life?” Who will answer? Who will take responsibility for Zahid, motherless and defenseless?
He said that while Zahid was in jail, his father Ilyas Sheikh suffered a heart attack and his mother Hamida Begum died of pain. He demanded a proper investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment for those who ruined Zahid’s life. Meanwhile, after his release, he was taken to his sister’s house in the Miapara area of the Khulna metropolis.
In 1994, Zahid Sheikh, son of Ilias Sheikh of Narikeli Chandpur in Rupsha Upazila of Khulna, married Rahima, daughter of Moin Uddin of Uttar Para of Fakirhat Police Station in Bagerhat. Zahid Sheikh used to stay at his father-in-law’s house. Later a daughter was born in his family. Her name is Reshma Khatun. The couple began living in a makeshift house 500 meters from Rahima’s father’s house on January 15, 1996, three months before the murder. On the afternoon of January 17, Rahima’s mother, Anjira Begum, saw her daughter’s door wet. Unable to respond by shouting from outside, he entered and found Rahima’s body with the baby under the kantha and blanket on the bed. Rahima’s father, Moin Uddin, filed a murder case with the Fakirhat police station the next day. The police filed a charge sheet in the case on November 19, 1996. Previously, Zahid surrendered to the court on January 16 of that year. Three years after the murder, on June 25, 2000, the Bagerhat District and Session Judge sentenced the defendant Sheikh Zahid to death.
