After a long wait, the peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban will begin in the Qatari capital Doha. Al Jazeera, based in Qatar, reports that it will start tomorrow Saturday.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday (September 10) the start of peace talks in Afghanistan.
“Qatar is pleased to announce that the Afghan-Taliban peace talks will begin in Doha on Saturday, September 12,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Direct talks between the various parties in Afghanistan will play an important role in establishing a lasting peace in Afghanistan.
Confirming the talks in Doha, the Afghan government said: “The Afghan government has made all preparations to establish peace. A delegation is scheduled to arrive in the Qatari capital on Friday.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said in a statement Thursday that he was going to Doha, Qatar, to attend US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s Afghan peace talks.
Welcoming the Afghan peace talks, Mike Pompeo said that “Afghanistan has a historic opportunity to end four decades of war and bloodshed.”
The Taliban also confirmed their participation in the talks, saying that they “will advance the negotiation process in an appropriate manner in light of Islamic values and national interests to achieve comprehensive peace and Islamic order.”
Six freed Taliban members have already arrived in Doha, Qatar. It is known that they will also participate in the discussion meeting.
