A young man from Dhaka met a 16-year-old girl from the United States on Instagram a few years ago. Friendship from identity. Tactically, this young American from Dhaka used to push for photos of the naked girl. At first, the girl gave some photos of herself naked. At one point, the teenager realizes that she has fallen into the trap of child pornography. Later, the girl reported the matter to the Cybercrime Investigation Department of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) in Dhaka via social media Facebook. The cybercrime department ran a lengthy search for about 6 months and found a horrible cycle of child pornography. Last Thursday (October 15), three members of the network, Borhan Uddin, Abdullah Al Mahmoud and Avi Hossain, were arrested. On Sunday (October 17), the three made confessional statements in court.
Ishtiaq Ahmed, assistant commissioner for digital forensics in the cybercrime investigation department, said the network was a ploy to collect nude photos and videos of local and foreign children and adolescents and provide them to child pornography groups and websites. Child pornography is generally traded around the world via the Dark Web. We are also looking at what kind of economic benefits this cycle has made from trading child pornography.

How was this cycle found?

Officials from the Dhaka Cybercrime Investigation Department said that on February 2 this year, an American teenager filed a complaint via Facebook. The teenager allegedly told the cybercrime department that he was blackmailing her with a nude photo. The girl gave an IP number to the cybercrime department. Cybercrime department officials began the search based on that IP number.

Officials with the cybercrime department said they searched for and identified the user of the IP number. Borhan, a user of the IP number, was arrested in a raid on a house in North Shahjahanpur on Thursday night. According to his information, Abdullah Al Mahmood was arrested in Riazbagh under the Rampura Police Station and Avi in the Pallabi area. Among those arrested is Borhan, a graduate of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) of a private university. The other two are BBA students from two other private universities.

The way they used to trade child pornography

Cybercrime officials say Borhan first denied child pornography after his arrest. But at one point during the interrogation he was forced to admit everything. A folder was recovered from a computer used by Borhan, where nude photos of 45 local and foreign teenagers were found. Of which there were 3,316 files. There was a folder in the name of the girl in the United States. Borhan’s computer can also be found by logging into various international child pornography websites.

During questioning, Borhan said he was primarily associated with various Instagram-based child pornography groups. Child pornography groups on Instagram are known as ‘off’. From these groups, teens have learned to motivate and collect nude photos. Later, he used this technique to collect photos of naked teenagers and upload them to child pornography groups.

Cybercrime officials say they have recovered six fake Instagram IDs from Borhan’s possession. Multiple fake email IDs have also been recovered. Borhan used to create fake IDs on Instagram and establish relationships with teenagers at home and abroad by posing as a lesbian woman. At one point, he used to collect teen nude photos and videos. Those videos and images were uploaded to porn websites and groups.

An official with the cybercrime department said they had recovered some documents from the arrested Borhan, which outlined 13 strategies to entice a teenager to provide nude photos online. During questioning, Borhan said the tactic was given to him by the administrator of a child pornography group on Instagram.

How is child pornography marketed?

Child pornography is on the rise around the world, even under strict surveillance. This trade in child pornography is conducted through the Dark Web. Nude videos or photos of children or teenagers are uploaded on various websites. The live broadcast is gone too. People from all over the world come to these websites spending money. Cryptocurrency bitcoins are commonly used as currency in these cases. These websites can also be accessed by paying dollars online.

The international law enforcement agency Interpol has long been working to identify and arrest members of the child pornography ring. So far they have identified and arrested more than 10,000 criminals from different countries. Based on information provided by Interpol, the CID arrested three members of the child pornography ring in Dhaka in June 2014, including Tipu Kibria. At that time, the group made porn videos of at least five hundred children and handed them over to the International Circle of Child Pornography in exchange for money.

Tanvir Hasan Zoha, a cybersecurity analyst and assistant professor at Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT), said that the trade in child pornography is mainly done through the Dark or Deep Web, a password-protected service. Currently, due to the rise of cyber patrols around the world, porn sites are not running on the web surface. Everything is deepened on the web. Criminals in the dark web use e-commerce. Many of our people here are involved in various crimes such as child pornography on the dark web. This is why we need to monitor the dark web.

Tanvir Hasan Zoha said more investigation is needed to identify the three people who were arrested for providing photographs and videos of child pornography. They have an international network. If necessary, all members of the network should be located in collaboration with the International Police Organization – Interpol.
