Dhaka: Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has demanded that clerics stop campaigning for the construction of a sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, saying his five proposals will be resolved through talks. The government will not hurt anyone’s religious feelings and will not go beyond the constitution.
The minister was answering questions from journalists in his office at the secretariat on Tuesday (December 15) after a meeting with some of the top leaders of Hifazat-e-Islam at the interior minister’s residence in Dhanmondi on Monday. at night.
In the presence of the Minister of State and the Secretary of Religion, 12 leading academics in the country led by Maulana Mahmudul Hasan, President of BEFAC, exchanged views at the meeting.
The interior minister said that on December 5, the best academics from across the country sent a letter to the prime minister to discuss in detail the current situation in the country. He approached me to discuss the letter.
‘There have been fruitful talks. The more we talk, the more we talk. We believe that we can solve all the problems through dialogue. We can achieve unity. We will be able to reach a consensus on all the issues that have come up in the talks. ‘
The Interior Minister said they also have the father of the Bengali nation in their hearts. They also recognize that the Prime Minister is a genuine Muslim, fulfilling his religious duties. As much as there is unity through speech, I will be able to finish all the questions through more inshallah talks.
“There is consensus on some issues,” he said, adding that the talks have started and will continue.
When asked if they were still in that position instead of the Bangabandhu sculpture, the minister said that they wanted to meet with the prime minister. We can reach consensus through dialogue.
They have made this request, so that no one comes down the street and commits acts of vandalism. They have come to complete agreement with us that no one should come and create chaos without disturbing any kind of peace. ‘
The interior minister said they have also spoken out against attempts to spread various tensions on Facebook. They say control these. They have also called for an anti-government movement.
He said that they would like to finalize the five proposals through discussions. We have come a long way. I hope I can decide through discussion.
This means that their demands have to be accepted in the end – said the minister in question, I did not say that. I said we will end the discussion.
In response to the instinctive policy of the government, said the minister, there is no question. The government never believes in the principle of kneeling.
‘We will not go beyond the constitution. We don’t want to hurt anyone’s religious feelings. I want to end the discussion. ‘
Asked if the government’s kneeling policy is to negotiate with those who have asked to throw the sculpture of the Father of the Nation in the Buriganga, the Interior Minister said that the Awami League never does a kneeling policy. Our government does everything clearly. We will not do anything outside the constitution. This does not mean that we should despise any religion.
“We are following religious culture, religious rules and scholars have also recognized that our Prime Minister is a devout Muslim. He performed the five daily prayers on time and also recited the Tahajjud prayers. They think that the appeal they have made to the Prime Minister it will end with negotiations. We have started the discussion, you will surely see a fruitful outcome of the discussion. ‘
When asked if the government is in a dilemma over the construction of the sculpture, the minister said: “We will not go beyond the constitution.” I will not hurt anyone’s religious feelings. Whether the sculpture will be where it is or not, we are discussing them all.
He said, the obvious thing is: why is the sculpture made? But he is not adored. It is not an idol. We are talking about who Bangabandhu was in his rebirth, we want to have Bangabandhu in our hearts.
“They said to build a Mujib Minar instead of the original sculpture, we said we would finish through negotiations. ‘
The government is flexible in the construction of sculptures, said the minister, “I did not say flexible. There will be no sculptures, I never said that. I made it clear, no decision has been made that the sculpture will not be there, I will get it out of there. No decision has been made about this place.
“They want to meet with the prime minister. We will make a proposal,” he said. See you if you agree. It is also our duty to keep the Prime Minister healthy because of Kovid-19. If you want to meet, you will.
When asked if the Prime Minister had given him the responsibility of meeting him, he said: “Why give the responsibility to me?” Many are in charge. Since the issue of peace and order is emerging, I have introduced myself.
When asked if the sculpture work would continue in this situation, he said it was ongoing. You see them all.
When asked if the minaret and the sculpture would be together in the alternative proposal, he answered no. We say none of the decisions. It will be discussed further. Our Prime Minister will speak on a grand scale.
