Attorneys for the 13 defendants in the Beating Death Case of Abrar Fahad, a student at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), have completed the hearing. However, as the hearing for the remaining nine defendants had not ended, the court set September 9 as the new date to file the charges. Previously, 22 defendants in jail were brought before the court. Later, state attorney Mosharraf Hossain Kajal, Ehesanul Haque Samaji, and attorney Md. Abu Abdullah Bhuiyan held a hearing in favor of the charge sheet.
During the hearing, Musharraf Hossain Kajal said: “It is very sad that they caused this incident. He called Abrar and beat him to death in the name of interrogation. If he asked for water, he would not give it. It was not a good deed. Abrar’s parents, the people of this country are waiting for justice. Let the guilty be punished.
Ehesanul Haque Samaji said: ‘The accused brutally killed Abrar. It is not a heinous and brutal crime. Our expectation is that justice is guaranteed. There is enough material in the case to press charges against the defendants.
The defendant’s lawyers began to listen to the accusations. His lawyers then concluded the hearing on behalf of the 13 defendants. As the hearing for the rest of the defendants had not ended, the court set a new date to formulate the charges.
Meanwhile, on March 22, the same court set April 8 for the hearing. But the hearing was not held because of Corona. On August 9, the court set a new date for the hearing.
On November 13, the DB Wahiduzzaman inspector, the investigating officer in the case, presented the charge sheet at the Dhaka Metropolitan Court of First Instance. He charged 25 defendants on the charge sheet. In addition, 60 people were called as witnesses.
The defendants in the case are Mehedi Hasan Russell, expelled general secretary of the BUET branch of BCL, Muhtamim Fouad, deputy general secretary, Anik Sarkar alias Apu, secretary of information and research, Mehedi Hasan Robin alias Shant, organization secretary, Amit Saha, legal undersecretary and Ifti, undersecretary of social services. Mosharraf Sakal, Sports Secretary Meftahul Islam Zion, Book and Publication Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed Munna, Activist Muntasir Al Jemi, Khandaker Tabakhkharul Islam Tanvir, Mujahidur Rahman, Moniruzzaman Monir, Akash Hossain, Hossain Mohammad, Tomaj, Hossain Mohammad. Huraira, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Abrar’s roommate, Mizanur Rahman, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, Morshed Amatya Islam, SM Mahmud Setu, Muhammad Morshed-uz-Zaman Mandal alias Jisan, Ehteshamul Rabbi alias Tanim and Mujtaba.
Three of the accused are fugitives. In addition, eight of them have made confessional statements in court.
On the night of October 8, 2019, Abrar Fahad was found unconscious on the second floor of BUET’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall. He was later taken to the Dhaka Medical College (DMC) hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. Abrar’s father, Barkatullah, filed a murder case with the Chawkbazar police station for the incident.
