A suicide bomber has killed at least 16 people outside an educational institution in the Afghan capital, Kabul. At least 57 people were injured, authorities said.
The attacker struck shortly after noon in front of a private higher education institution, officials from the Afghan Interior Ministry said. Hundreds of Shiite students are housed in the building in the Barchi area of Dast.
The BBC says many of the injured were taken to hospital. The death toll is expected to rise further. The Taliban have denied responsibility for the attack. It is not yet clear who is behind this.
Peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban insurgents continue in Qatar’s capital Doha, but violence has recently escalated in Afghanistan. In most cases, counterattacks between the Taliban and government forces continue.
A spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, Tariq Aryan, said in a statement that a suicide bomber had tried to enter the school. He also said the explosion occurred after guards identified him as the attacker.
