Shilpi Begum, 40, was stabbed to death by a leader of the Awami League in Singra, Natore. His younger sister, Lovely Parveen, was injured. The incident took place in the Bara Chaugram village of the Chaugram union in the upazila on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Begum Chowgram, wife of the late Idris Ali Mandal, former secretary general of the Awami League.

According to police sources, Haider Ali Mandal, a local farmer, has been cultivating a field belonging to three men in the Bara Chowgram field of upazila. Recently, Rabiul Islam Warish, deputy general secretary of the Chowgram Union Awami League, claimed to be the owner of the land. Suddenly, on Sunday morning, Rabiul went to cultivate the land with the people. Awami League activists Shilpi Begum and Lovely Parveen, two daughters of farmer Haider Ali Mandal, were tied up and stabbed. When they were later rescued and taken to the Upazila Health Complex, A’League activist doctor on duty Shilpi Begum pronounced her dead.

Chougram UP President Md Jahedul Islam Bhola said the killings took place in a dispute over land acquisition. The late artist Begum was a devoted Awami League activist.
