Police arrested Liaquat Fakir, general secretary of the Telihati Union Awami League in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila, on charges of snatching garments made from a factory. A Gazipur District Detective Police team arrested him at his home in Mulaid village on Wednesday night.
The Liaquat Fakir arrested is the son of Jahed Ali Fakir from Mulaid village. He is the general secretary of the newly formed Telihati Union Awami League in Sreepur.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (CO) Khandaker Imam Hossain said: “He was handed over to the police after being arrested by members of the district detective police on Wednesday night. He was later sent to court on Thursday morning.
OC Khandaker Imam Hossain said that on August 10, a local factory official filed a case against him for seizing ready-made garments. Police have already arrested three people accused of being involved in the incident. Later looted property and a pick-up truck were recovered. He was charged in the case when the detainees informed the police that the robbery had occurred under the leadership of League leader Telihati Union Awami.
Abdur Rahman, a senior managing official at Blue Planet Knitwear Limited, said Radiation Washing Limited under the JMP East police station was used to wash 4,000 garments worth Tk 1.53 million on August 9 at noon.‘Ruhul Amin, the factory driver, set off for the purpose. Later, upon reaching 30 yards south of the flyover in the Mauna Chowrasta area of Sreepur, a group of youths on three motorcycles stopped the minibus on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. Later, they looted goods worth more than 15 lakh rupees produced by the factory on the minibus. He filed a case at the Sreepur Police Station on August 10.
The president of the Telihati Union Awami League and the president of the union’s local council, Abdul Baten Sarkar, said: ‘Liaquat Fakir is the general secretary of my committee. I heard that there are multiple cases against Liaquat. The party’s image depends on the activities of the leaders and workers. If any action is taken against him, the police station and the party district committee can take it. They will decide about it.
