Pabna Additional Police Superintendent Masud Alam said the incident occurred around 3:30 pm on the way back after burying the body.
Bakul, 32, was beaten to death in the Ananta Mor area of the district city on Friday night.
Bakul was a member of District No. 8 of the Sadar Upalo Dogachhi Union and was the deputy general secretary of the District Awami League.
At least nine houses were burned after the bodies were buried Saturday afternoon.
Dulal Mia, deputy director of the district fire service, said: “After receiving the news, we went to the scene and controlled the fire. The extent of the damage is not yet known. “
The protesters threw stones at the police, the police alleged.
Police officer Masud said: “When Bakul family members and villagers tried to control the situation while setting fire to and destroying houses, protesters threw bricks at us. Three policemen were injured. Later, the situation was brought under control by firing barrels of gas. “
He said police were working to catch the killer and asked Bakul supporters to cooperate in the investigation without creating an unpleasant situation.
Additional police officers have been deployed to the area to keep the situation under control, he said.
