Police officer Hasan Ali and his wife Sathi Begum have been accused of beating to death a disabled rickshaw driver named Nazmul Islam (30) in the city of Rangpur.
Police arrested the defendants amid local protests. Four people were injured when police blocked the road in protest of the killings. Later additional police arrived and controlled the situation.
The incident took place in Eidgapara, Ashratpur in the city’s 26th district on Wednesday afternoon.
The locals said that Nazmul Islam, a disabled man from the village of Teesta Mustafi in Lalmonirhat, lived in a rented house on Eidgahpara in Ashratpur. He used to rent a battery powered rickshaw because he had leg problems.
The rickshaw belonged to Hasan Ali, an agent who worked at the Rangpur Police Training Center. His home is in Gaibandha. He rented a house in Asratpur Kotpara and lived with his family.
The rickshaw was stolen last Tuesday night. Later, Nazmul Islam made an effort to rescue the rickshaw and returned it to the owner Hasan Ali. But police officer Hasan Ali called him at home with the accusation of being a thief and tortured him.
At one point, when the situation became alarming, Nazmul was hung inside the house in Kotpara with a rope around his neck. The matter was later promoted as suicide.
Police recovered a hammer and a machete from the scene as torture equipment while recovering the body of the deceased. There were wound marks on the body of the deceased. The nails were crushed.
Meanwhile, locals began to protest after seeing Nazmul’s body hanging from the house on Wednesday afternoon. Upon receiving the news, the Tajhat Metropolitan Police Station arrived at the scene and the agitated locals also blocked them.
Locals allege that after beating Nazmul to death, police officer Hasan carried out a suicide campaign by hanging his body.
At one point, agitated villagers began to protest by setting fire to the corner of the park on the Rangpur-Kurigram road. As a result, all types of vehicles were stopped on the road from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
In this incident, several automatic vehicles and other vehicles were vandalized by the agitated crowd. There were chases and clashes with the police. The police used the baton to disperse the offended crowd.
About two hours later, around 7 pm, a large number of police officers arrived at the scene and controlled the situation. Traffic is normal. The body of the deceased was later recovered and taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police (Kotwali area) Deputy Commissioner Altab Hossain said the situation was under police control. Police officer Hasan Ali and his wife Sathi Begum were arrested in the incident.
