A great colorful chapter of childhood is over

# America: Gone are the great chapters, the many colorful days of stagnant childhood … Gone are the days of Oscar-winning director Jean Ditch of the ‘Tom and Jerry’ cartoon series. He also directed some episodes of the series ‘Popeye the Sailor’.

Not just a director, Ditch was an illustrator, animator, and producer at the same time. The legendary artist died at his home in Prague at the age of 95.

In 1970 Ditch’s Munro won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. In 1984, two of his films, Hair’s Nudnick and How to Avoid Friendship, were nominated for an Oscar.

Jean Ditch was born on August 8, 1924 in Chicago. He arrived in Prague in 1959. He wanted to stay 10 days, but fell in love with his future wife Denka and never returned to Chicago, where he found a home in Prague. In 2004, he was awarded the Winsor Mack Prize for his animation career.
