The Uttar Pradesh police have brought a case against Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Indian opposition Congress, and his sister Priyanka Gandhi for holding a demonstration in defiance of government restrictions.

The case was brought against them on Thursday, hours after police detained them as they were on their way to visit relatives of a young woman killed in an organized rape in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, NDTV reported.

NDTV reports that a case has been brought against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi under India’s epidemic law for holding large gatherings in violation of government regulations.

The case was registered at the Ecotech One Police Station in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. 150 congressional leaders and activists have been charged in the case.

A young woman who was gang-raped in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, died Tuesday while receiving treatment in the capital New Delhi. Later, the Uttar Pradesh police burned the girl’s body in the dead of night without the presence of relatives. The incident sparked widespread outrage across the country.

The police arrested the leader of Congress Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi on their way to visit the girl’s relatives. Uttar Pradesh police said they were arrested for holding a large demonstration in violation of government rules.

Rahul Gandhi alleged that Uttar Pradesh police stopped the convoy on its way from Delhi to Uttar Pradesh to meet members of the girl’s family. Party activists blocked roads to protest the incident, the police used the baton to charge the protesters.
