A freighter carrying 43 crew members and 6,000 cows sank in the Sea of ​​Japan after a typhoon sent a distant signal. Said a man rescued by the Japanese Coast Guard.

On Wednesday morning, Amami, Japan, sent a warning message from Gulf Livestock 1, 185 kilometers (115 miles) west of Osima Island.

Later that day, the Japanese Coast Guard rescued a man. The 45-year-old Filipino is the ship’s first mate. She said she jumped into the sea wearing a life jacket after posting a warning sign on the ship.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that the rescued crew said one of the ship’s engines had broken down and the ship sank in strong waves.

It was not immediately clear when and where the ship sank. However, the man said he did not see any other crew while awaiting rescue.

Three Coast Guard ships, five aircraft and specially trained divers are conducting search and rescue operations.

The sunken ship had 39 crew from the Philippines, two from New Zealand and two from Australia. The ship was carrying 5,800 cows at that time.
