Four leaders, including two BNP council candidates, have been accused of receiving money from the Awami League council candidates in the upcoming Santahar municipality elections in Bogra’s Adamdighi upazila. On the other hand, the Awami League candidate is becoming a councilman without competition. This has created anger among the leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliates.
Deputy Golam Mohammad Siraj, district BNP coordinator, and joint coordinator, advocate AKM Saiful Islam, protested the incident on Thursday (December 24). The grassroots leaders of the BNP Municipal de Santahar made a written recommendation to the district committee for the expulsion of the accused.
The four accused leaders are Zahidul Islam, a member of the convening committee of the Santahar Municipal BNP and Mahamudul Alam, a member of the Municipal Juba Dal, Mamunur Rashid, former president of the Municipal Juba Dal and Mahfuzul Haque, a member of the BNP Adamdighi convening committee Upazila.
The letter signed by the convener of the Santahar Municipal BNP, Mojibur Rahman, and the joint convener, Rafiqul Islam, mentions that the second phase of the Santahar municipal elections will take place on January 18 through the EVM system. BNP municipal leader Zahidul Islam and Juba Dal municipal leader Mahamudul Alam gathered the party’s nomination documents to compete for the position of councilor in district no. Abdul Quddus is the only Awami League candidate here. The two BNP-nominated councilor candidates, Juba Dal leader Mamunur Rashid, and BNP leader Mahfuzul Haque, took money from the Awami League candidate Quddus. For this reason, the two candidates refrained from submitting their nomination papers on December 20. As a result, Abdul Quddus, candidate of the Awami League, is being elected unopposed as a councilor in District No. 8 of Santahar Municipality.
The letter also stated that on December 21 an emergency meeting of the BNP Municipal de Santahar was held in this regard. At that meeting, it was unanimously decided to expel four leaders of the organization, including the two candidates for councilors. A letter with recommendations was sent to the BNP district leaders.
Bogra District Joint BNP Coordinator Fazlul Bari Talukder Belal confirmed the incident, saying: “Four leaders have protested, including two candidates for councilors. If they do not give the correct answer, the decision will be made to expel them from the organization.
