A group of Rohingya from the Cox’s Bazar refugee camp are visiting Bhasanchar in the Bay of Bengal, near Hatia Island in Noakhali. The 40-member Rohingya delegation left Cox’s Bazar on Saturday morning. They are to be taken to Chittagong by road and to Bhasanchar on a warship under the supervision of the Department of the Armed Forces.

The Commissioner for Refugee Aid and Repatriation, Deputy Secretary Mahbub Alam Talukder confirmed the visit of the Rohingya delegation to Bhasanchar. They will return on September 6

According to Mahbub Alam Talukder, the delegation includes the names of Block Majhi, Sub Majhi, Head Majhi, leaders, teachers and imams from the camp. In addition, the government has already rescued 304 Rohingya from the sea who had recently been unable to reach Malaysia by sea and brought them to Bhasanchar in two sections. The government has already been encouraging ordinary Rohingya to go to Bhasanchar by showing videos there.

Mahbub Alam Talukder said: “We have selected 40 Rohingya from 34 camps in Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas and handed them over to the Armed Forces. The Rohingyas will visit Bhasanchar to see the various facilities on the island and will return to camp at Cox’s Bazar to explain to the other Rohingyas. This is a motivational activity. The Rohingya will be withdrawn if they want to go voluntarily.

Mahbub Alam mentioned that the government has built infrastructure for one lakh of Rohingya to live in Bhasanchar. One lakh of Rohingyas will be brought to Bhasanchar. He hoped the Rohingya would come to the island if they saw the facilities that have been built for the Rohingya in Bhasanchar.

The initiative has been positively mentioned on the Teknaf Jadimura Rohingya camp chief boatman list. Nur said: ‘If Bhasanchar is suitable for living, then the Rohingyas will definitely go there. We can explain it to everyone when we see it with our own eyes. ‘

“We are obliged to abide by the government’s decision,” said Mohammad Rafiq, a boatman from the Lumbasia camp in Kutupalong, Ukhia. However, I hope that Bangladesh will not make any decisions that will harm the Rohingya.

Mohammad Rafique added: “Government officials have spoken with Rohingya leaders about visiting Bhasanchar. We have promised to take Rohingya who are willing to visit Bhasanchar voluntarily.

Mohammad Hamid, a member of the Rohingya delegation, Kutupalong Rohingya camp boatmaster, said: “For the past few days, the camp boatmen have been urging everyone to go to Bhasanchar from house to house. If any family is willing to go to Bhasanchar voluntarily, they are asked to say so. But nobody is being forced. We will visit Bhasanchar and explain to the Rohingya what benefits the government will bring to the Rohingya there.

The relocation of Rohingya from Cox’s Bazar to Bhasanchar has been postponed due to lack of consent from international aid agencies and the United Nations.

The government has implemented a shelter project in Bhasanchar at a cost of Tk 2,312 crore of its own funds for the relocation of the Rohingya. In order to protect an area of 40 square kilometers from tides and swells, a 13-kilometer-long embankment and infrastructure of 120 cluster villages suitable for one lakh of Rohingya have been built. At a meeting of the National Economic Council in December last year, the cost of the project for Bhasanchar was increased by Tk 63 crore to Tk 3,095 crore.

In addition, the necessary educational institutions and medical centers have been built in Bhasanchar. The height of the embankment around the island has been increased from 10 feet to 19 feet, and the UN delegation building and jetty are being constructed with the addition of ancillary facilities.
