At least 15 people were injured in a clash between two groups in a prolonged meeting of the Ishwardi Upazila Awami League during the by-elections in the Pabna-4 (Ishwardi-Atgharia) electoral district. In this incident, all activities of Ishwardi Upazila and Chhatra Municipal League and Juba League were suspended.
Supporters of Awami Municipal League President Abul Kalam Azad Mintu and General Secretary Isaac Ali Malitha clashed in front of the Ishwardi Upazila Awami League office from 12 noon to 2 pm on Monday. The clash began with the welcome of the main guest before the start of the meeting.
According to the leaders and activists present, Ishaq Ali Malitha, Secretary General of the Awami Municipal League, along with Rafiqul Islam Liton, former Secretary for Freedom Fighter Affairs of the Central Swechchhasebak League, stood up to welcome the guest chief secretary of the Awami League, SM Kamal Hossain, and other guests. Abul Kalam Azad Mintu, son-in-law of the Awami Municipal League president and late MP Shamsur Rahman Sharif, arrived at the scene with 20-25 leaders and activists who supported him. After that, the two sides began to collide.
The injured were rescued and treated at the Ishwardi Upazila Complex. At least 15 people were treated here, including Isaac Malitha, Abu Bakkar Malitha, Labu and Rony. Between them, Labu and Rony have been sent to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Upon hearing the news, Ishwardi Police led by the Additional Superintendent of Police, Firoz Kabir, went to the scene. Subsequently, following the instructions of the central leaders, the guests reconciled between Abul Kalam Azad Mintu and Isaac Malitha. Both leaders told their staff to calm down. At this stage there was another round of confrontations.
Describing the incident as very sad, the Awami League’s Rajshahi divisional organization secretary, HM Kamal Hossain, told reporters that all organizational activities of the Ishwardi Upazila and Municipal BCL and Juba League had been suspended before taking organizational action against the guilty. He warned that no terrorist or criminal can remain in the Awami League.
The ship’s candidate, Nuruzzaman Biswas, told reporters that if the ship suffered damage due to the two leaders of the municipal Awami League (Abul Kalam Azad Mintu and Isaac Malitha), they would be held responsible. He instructed Abul Kalam Azad Mintu and Isaac Malitha not to go to the polls outside the municipality.
Abul Kalam Azad Mintu and Ishaq Ali Malitha blamed each other.
According to Ishwardi police sources, tensions between the Mintu and Malitha groups increased a few days ago. Abul Kalam Azad Mintu was a candidate in the by-elections. He has shown strength in various ways since the beginning of the by-election campaign to maintain his dominance after being deprived of his nomination. On the other hand, another party led by Ishaq Ali Malitha is trying to express its position.
Ishwardi Circle Additional Police Superintendent Firoz Kabir said that neither party had filed a complaint for the incident. No arrests have been made. The situation in the city remains calm. He said police patrols in the city have intensified even after that.
