Abul Kashem, deputy director of the district’s agricultural extension department, told local journalists on Thursday.
He said, collecting samples of the Teknaf insects and making a video last Wednesday, said a scientist at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Ruhul Amin and Debashish were sent to the government.
“It is a desert locust, not a locust,” he said by phone. It could be some kind of grasshopper.
However, samples of the insects could not be sent to the Gazipur Agricultural Research Center on Thursday due to courier service problems, he said.
The locust-like insect attacked a house in Teknaf district a few days ago. Hundreds of insects gathered there and ate leaves from one tree after another.
Sohail Sikder of Lambari Para in Teknaf, the owner of the vit, was concerned about this.
He said: “On the afternoon of April 17, I suddenly saw insects on some trees in my garden. The insects are destroying the leaves of the tree in an instant.
“I have never seen this insect before.”
He uploaded a video on Facebook. Then on April 22, the Teknaf Upazila Agriculture Officer came to see the insects. Agriculture officials observed the insects and killed them using Ripcord pesticides, he said.
Teknaf Upazila Deputy Director of Agriculture Office Shafiul Alam said: “After learning about the bugs, I ran to the house.
“I saw some black insects jumping up and down the tree and eating the leaves. Later I killed the insects using pesticides and reported to the higher authorities. “
Noting that the area around Sohail Sikder’s house in Teknaf is very dirty, he said that even if the insects are killed by spraying pesticides at first, there are still many insects left. Which then attacks the tree again.
“When the matter was reported to the district agriculture officer, he inspected the site and collected some samples and took them away.”
He went home again Thursday and sprayed pesticides and destroyed about 98 percent of the insects, he said.
Ò But it is not a lobster; Locusts can fly, they have wings. But this insect has no fan and cannot fly. It is a black insect.
Abul Kashem, deputy director of the district’s agricultural extension department, also said: “The way panic is spreading over this insect in Teknaf is not the case that locusts have entered Bangladesh.
“Because this insect does not destroy crops and the existence of this insect was not found in the farmland.”
He added that the locusts seen in the video in the Sahara desert, Africa, Pakistan and other places have nothing in common with this insect. So there is nothing to fear like a lobster.
Fear of locusts ‘not yet’ in Bangladesh
According to international media reports, locusts have been invading various African countries since late last year, including Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, causing extensive damage to crops.
Pakistan has been fighting locusts since the beginning of this year. On January 31, the government declared a national state of emergency.
The locust swarm also invaded Punjab, India, destroying crops on 22,000 acres of land in Pakistan’s Sindh province. They took the initiative to bring a special type of duck from China to handle lobsters.
On March 1, Chabbir bin Jahan, director of the plant protection branch of the Department of Agricultural Extension, told bdnews24.com that they had received no message from the ministry about locusts.
Earlier on February 18, Shabbir told BBC Bangla that the agriculture ministry had sent them a “letter to warn and prepare for the locust infestation.”
