Outstanding playwright Usha Ganguly has passed away. According to his family sources, Usha Ganguly, founder of the dramatic group ‘Rangakarmi’, died in Calcutta on Thursday morning. He was 65 years old at the time of his death. Usha Ganguly was one of two people who reached the pinnacle of success by staging Hindi dramas in West Bengal. Another of the Hindu playwrights in Bengal is Shamananda Jalan, the founder of ‘Padatik’. Usha Ganguly’s acting career began with Basant Sena’s performance in the play ‘Mitti Ki Gari’ based on Shudrak’s ‘Mritchakatikam’. Born in the village of Nerva in Uttar Pradesh, he grew up in Rajasthan. Later he came to Calcutta and was admitted to Sri Shikshayatan College and passed his master’s degree in Hindi literature. In 1966, he established his own theater company ‘Rangakarmi’ in Calcutta. He began directing plays in 1960 after receiving training from the late playwright Tripti Mitra and the late director Mrinal Sen. Notable works directed by him are ‘Mahabhoj’, ‘Rudali’, ‘Holi’, ‘Sarhad Par Manto’, ‘Chandalika’. In 1911 he directed the Bengali drama ‘Mansi’. In 2003, he wrote the play ‘Kaushiknama’ based on Kashinath Singh’s story ‘Kane Kaun Kumati Lagi’. He also helped the late director write the script for Rituparno Ghosh’s ‘Raincoat’ in 2004. In 1997, he received the Sangeet Natak Academy Award for directing. She also won the Best Government Actress award in West Bengal for her performance in ‘Gudiya Ghar’ based on Ibsen’s play ‘A Doll’s House’ directed by Tripti Mitra. The leaders of various political parties, including the state government, have expressed their condolences for his death.
