In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the government has ordered that necessary preparations be made to maintain other factories, including clothing, in accordance with hygiene standards. The Prime Minister’s Office has asked industry stakeholders to give a quick summary in this regard.

The decision was made at a meeting in the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday night. However, no specific date has been set for when the factory can open.

The meeting, chaired by the chief secretary of the Office of Prime Minister Ahmed Kaikaus, was attended by the country’s top business leaders.

According to the sources of the meeting, in addition to the issue of reopening the factory, a number of topics were discussed, including dismissal (temporarily closed), ownership of government incentives, payment of utility bills, including gas and electricity, during closing without penalty. The ministry issued an order saying that recently fired factory owners will not receive government incentives.

“The government is not a special committee or a working group,” Ahmed Kaikaus told Kaler Kanth. Apart from this, the government does not want to serve the private sector. Bangladesh Bank will decide how to get the incentive money. Bangladesh Bank will also decide whether any factories declared layoff will receive incentives. The industry will decide whether to open or close the factory.

A business leader who was present at the meeting said on condition of anonymity: “The meeting was positive about the wages paid to the laid-off factory workers (about 80 percent).” The Ministry of Finance may issue another modified order in this regard. The government is also positive in paying the service bill without penalty later.

The meeting was attended by the Cabinet Secretary, the Finance Secretary, the Labor Secretary, the former FBCCI President and Member of Parliament Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, BKMEA President Selim Osman, Senior Vice President Mohammad Hatem, the former President of BGMEA Abdus Salam Murshedy, Anwarul Alam Chowdhury Parvez, current President. Rubana Haque, BTMA President, Mohammad Ali Khokon and others.

Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin told Kaler Kanth: “The meeting discussed how to deal with the current situation in the garment sector. The Prime Minister’s Office has asked stakeholders to give their opinion soon on opening garment factories to boost the country’s economy. We have not decided to open the factory at this time. ‘
